Rothlú

Rothlú

Frances McGonigle has been turning remnant textile and scrap paper into Rothlú jewellery since 2017. Her studio is located in the Ox Mountains, County Mayo- a place of great natural inspiration.

With a background in textiles and fine art painting, she uses the resist techniques of batik and shibori to hand-pattern and dye her base material. This is transformed into gorgeously hued, painterly jewellery, with no two pieces ever the same.

The maker’s mark is always evident in her work. For example, Frances uses “tjanting” wax drawing, and sgrafitto wax scrapping to invoke the patterns of rock, water, leaves, feathers and the multitude of nature’s phenomena in her surroundings. She loves to collaborate and make bespoke pieces for her customers.

Frances is a featured artist/jeweller in Deirdre Davy’s 2023 book “Artists of the Wild Atlantic Way”.
